Spring at Subversive

As soon as the sun pops out from that thick midwest gray sky, you know it’s time to find your gear and get ready for spring!
Spring has a lot of new beginnings, fresh starts, and a lot of cabin fever. At least for me. This April first marked 2 years officially open! To celebrate, I decided to lead a nice cruise night. Not just to celebrate our anniversary, but to kick off spring bike riding season. So Tommy and I sat down and cracked a couple beers and hashed it out. We thought it would be great to have a shop ride since we haven't officially held one yet. Then I thought since a lot of people have had bikes parked all winter that it would be a great idea to keep it a slow pace and keep the vibe real chill. More focused on being a social event. Meet some new friends to ride with this year. So I encouraged everyone to bring a cruiser style bike. Classic’s, Low riders, Customs, and dubbed the ride “The Subversive Slow Roll”. That’s exactly what I wanted. No KOM attempts, No power ranger outfits or strava segments to time. Just rollin out on a nice spring evening with a bunch of friends. That’s exactly what we did. Made a couple stops at some local bike friendly joints (The Olympic Tavern and Prarie Street Brewing Company). At the end we had made a ton of new friends and re-discovered a not so new but very fun and creative / expressive way to enjoy the bike. I can’t wait for the next cruise night! The weather is only getting nicer from here!
The take away for me after the ride was that It’s not always about stats and fitness. Riding a bike can just mean getting together with friends and having a good time in the moment, expressing yourself as an individual BUT as a community. Slow life down a bit and be present. My grandpa said “You’ll get there when you get there.”
